The Akron Zoo partnered with Akron Public Schools (APS) to host Backpack Adventure on Aug. 15-16. Over the two days, 5,600 APS students and their families enjoyed a free evening at the zoo. More than 2,300 backpacks full of school supplies were passed out to students, grades kindergarten through fifth grade.
During the event, families were connected to various community services offered. Akron Children’s Hospital provided wellness checks and immunizations and APS shared school-related information with parents.
Community organizations involved included Akron Children’s Museum, Akron Police and Fire Departments, Child Guidance & Family Solutions, Early Childhood Resource Center - Summit County SPARK and Summit County Developmental Disabilities Board.
Backpack Adventure was made possible thanks to support by Dominion Energy and Robert O. and Annamae Orr Family Foundation.
